FAQ – Answers Forged in Steel
Got questions? You’re in the right place. Whether you’re wondering how to place a custom order, what kind of steel I use, or how long it takes to forge a piece – this section covers the most common questions I get.
1. Are your axes and tomahawks fully hand-made?
Yes. Each piece is individually forged by hand using traditional blacksmithing techniques. I do not use mass-production methods or CNC machinery. Every axe and tomahawk is shaped at the anvil, heat-treated, ground, and finished manually, ensuring a unique and high-performance tool or collectible.
2. What materials do you use in your axes?
I primarily use carbon tool steels such as 1055, 1045, or 02, depending on the intended use of the blade. These steels provide excellent edge retention, toughness, and durability. For handles, I use woods like ash, hickory, or classic ones like curly maple- treated for longevity and performance.
3. Are your products functional or decorative?
All my axes and tomahawks are made to be fully functional unless otherwise stated. They are heat-treated and tested to withstand real use — whether in woodcraft, bushcraft, throwing sports, or historical reenactment. However, due to the craftsmanship, many clients also collect them as display pieces.
4. Can I request a custom design or engraving?
Yes, custom orders are welcome. I can create personalized designs, engrave initials, symbols, runes, or other motifs. Custom work depends on the complexity and current waitlist, so please contact me directly for a consultation and quote.
5. Do your axes come sharpened?
Yes, unless otherwise requested, every axe and tomahawk is shipped sharp and ready for use. For throwing or reenactment purposes, I can also provide blunted edges upon request.
6. How should I care for my hand-forged axe?
Hand-forged tools require regular maintenance. Keep the blade dry and lightly oiled to prevent rust. Wooden handles should be treated with linseed oil or beeswax-based products periodically. Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, and store your axe in a dry place.
7. Do you ship internationally?
Yes, I offer international shipping. However, laws concerning edged tools vary by country, so it is your responsibility to ensure the item is legal to import. Shipping costs and customs fees may vary depending on your location.
8. What is your turnaround time?
For in-stock items, I usually ship within 3–5 business days. For custom orders, the lead time varies from 4 to 8 weeks depending on complexity and backlog. I will provide an estimated delivery window upon ordering.
9. Can I return or exchange my item?
Because each item is handmade, I generally do not accept returns unless the product arrives damaged or defective. However, I stand behind my craftsmanship, and if there is an issue, I will work with you to find a fair resolution. Custom orders are non-refundable once production has started.
10. Do you offer wholesale or bulk pricing?
Since each piece is individually hand-forged and requires the same amount of time and care to create, I don’t offer standard wholesale pricing. However, I’m open to discussing possible discounts for bulk orders or larger commissions on a case-by-case basis. Feel free to contact me to talk through the details.
