Product Details

Dakota Batwing Pipe Tomahawk

On the Great Plains, the pipe tomahawk carried a meaning far greater than that of an ordinary axe. It represented peace and war, diplomacy and survival—an object that could be presented in ceremony one moment and relied upon in the wilderness the next. Inspired by the historic pipe tomahawks of the Dakota Territory, this piece captures the elegance and symbolism of those remarkable originals while remaining a fully functional tool.

The defining feature of this tomahawk is the distinctive batwing cutout, a pattern often associated with 19th-century Plains pipe tomahawks. Carefully forged by hand from 1055 carbon steel, the head combines graceful lines with excellent cutting performance, while the integrated pipe bowl and smoke channel make this a fully functional smoking pipe, crafted using traditional construction methods.

The richly figured curly ash handle is drilled to create a working smoke passage and is fitted with an antiqued brass mouthpiece at the base and an antiqued brass top needle above the bowl, faithfully echoing the details found on original frontier and Native American trade tomahawks. Each component is individually hand-fitted, creating a piece that is as beautiful as it is functional.

Whether displayed as a collector’s centerpiece, carried for historical reenactment, or appreciated as a working pipe tomahawk, this handcrafted piece embodies the craftsmanship and spirit of the American frontier.

Every tomahawk includes a handmade leather edge cover for safe storage and transport.
